Six hundred thousand euro in credit is sitting on Leap Cards that haven't been used in over five years.

Since the Leap card was brought in back in 2011, more than four million have been issued.

But 850,000 of them haven't been used in two years -- and 110,000 have lain dormant for five years, according to the Irish Examiner.

Dermot O'Gara from the National Transport Authority says the credit on those cards they consider dormant is going to fund the Kids Go Free scheme.

"The money that we're using for the Kids Go Free promotion is money that's been sitting on Leap Cards that haven't been used for a few years," he said. "It's a good way of using the money and it's a way of promoting the use of public transport."

But he said there is some hope for commuters who've lost a card.

"If they're registered, we can transfer whatever credit was on the card to a new card. There's ways for people to get around that.," he said. We'd vcertainly encourage people to go through the process of registering their card."
