A protest is planned for Dollymount Beach today over the frequent need for bathing bans along the city's coastline.

The Love Dublin Bay Group wants the constant overflows of sewage into Dublin Bay to be addressed.

Organiser and Green Party Councillor Donna Cooney say locals are reaching the "end of their tether."

She says "They're really just fed up, because we've had things like the kite festival.

"People were told that kids couldn't even play in the sand because the sea water comes over the sand and that can infect it." She added.

Fingal Coastline

Meanwhile, Fingal County Council is being criticised for using mechanical diggers to clear up beaches in the area.

The local Donabate and Portrane Clean Coasts Group says they are destroying the coastline.

They say rubbish is being collected alongside seaweed and loosening the sand.

An Taisce made a number of recommendations following meetings with officials in June and July.

The council has told Dublin Live that An Taisce recommends "the cessation of the practice".

The local authority said that over the next few days, each of the mounds of seaweed will be unravelled to find and remove the litter, on recommendation of the An Taisce report.
