Seventeen new cases of COVID-19 have been reported this evening along with one further death.

It takes the death toll in Ireland to 1,754 and the total number of confirmed cases to 25,819.

The acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said: “I appreciate how difficult it is for people to limit their social activities and to physically distance from friends and loved ones.

“These actions are vital to our collective effort to suppress this highly infectious disease as we work towards reopening our schools and our healthcare services, and to protect our healthcare workers who have been at the frontline of this pandemic over the past six months.”

As of midnight last night, just short of 580,000 tests had been carried out in Ireland with just over 29,000 coming back positive.

More than 51,000 have been carried out in the last week.

There are currently 14 people in hospital with the virus and six people in intensive care.

In Northern Ireland, no deaths have been recorded for a ninth day in a row, while nine more people have tested positive for the virus.
