Health officials have announced a further 4,821 COVID cases this evening.

Meanwhile, 3,772 people registered positive antigen tests through the HSE portal yesterday.

This morning, there were 591 COVID patients in Irish hospitals, down 48 on yesterday and 24 on this day last week.

There were 57 in intensive care, which is one fewer than yesterday and seven fewer than last week.

It comes after the Taoiseach has confirmed that the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) is to be disbanded.

In his latest letter to the Government, the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan the group had decided that it was now “timely to conclude the work of NPHET”.

NPHET called for an end to mandatory face masks in almost all settings and for the PCR testing system to be stood down people over 55 who are otherwise healthy.

This afternoon, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the Government would accept NPHET’s advice in full.
