O'Connell Street in Dublin went silent for a minute today, as the people of Ireland remembered,

those who fought for Irish Independence 106 years ago.

The ceremony was led by President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Micheál Martin at the GPO.

The Irish flag was lowered to half mast in honour of those who died - the President laid a wreath in their honour.

Defence Forces Chaplain Father Pascal Hanrahan, spoke of a new Ireland.

The priest said that those who had passed in the 1916 Rising were remembered and honoured today which included Men, Women and Children.

Hanrahan spoke of an Ireland that celebrates diversity, welcomes the stranger and promotes inclusion.
