Dublin City Council wants a cap on the size of groups on walking tours of the city.

The council has written to Fáilte Ireland to say the groups should be capped at 26 people.

Independent councillor Mannix Flynn brought a motion on the issue late last year.

He says the situation is getting out of hand, and Dublin needs to get the numbers right so visitors and locals can get along.

"Simply going around with a hundred people on a walking tour on the streets of Dublin is just not safe. It's wrong," he said.

He gave the example of a free tour group which met at Barnardo Square off Dame street this morning, which he said included about 110 people.

"In other jurisdictions where this was happening, like Barcelona, London, Berlin, they curtailed it," Councillor Flynn said.

"They brought it down to 26, 27 individuals because it was literally blocking up the cities."
