A man has been arrested after cannabis worth over €1.1 million was seized in Dublin Port.

55 kilos of the drug was discovered at Dublin Port yesterday afternoon in a consignment in a van on a ferry arriving from the UK.

The man in his 50s was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at a Dublin garda station where he can be held for up to a week.

A garda spokesperson says: "Gardaí from the DMR North Central Divisional Drugs Unit have arrested a male in his 50s following the seizure of cannabis with an estimated value of €1,106,000 million euros (pending analysis) by Revenue officers at Dublin Port yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024.

"Revenue officers discovered 55 kilograms of herbal cannabis concealed within a consignment of bottled water and garden supplies found in a van arriving on a ferry from the UK.

"The man was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, at a Garda Station in the Dublin Region. He can be held for up to seven days.

"Investigations are ongoing."

A Revenue spokesperson says: "Yesterday (03/04/2024), as a result of risk profiling and with the assistance of detector dog James, Revenue officers seized 55.3 kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €1,106,000 at Dublin Port.

"The detection was made when Revenue officers stopped a van that had arrived from the UK. The drugs were discovered concealed in vacuum-packed packages among a consignment of bottled water and garden furniture.

"A man in his 50s was arrested by An Garda Síochána and is currently detained at a Dublin Garda Station.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing joint investigations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding drug smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295."
