Nitelink services in Dublin should return to give a boost to the nighttime economy according to a Dublin City Councillor.

The weekend late-night bus routes were cancelled in December in line with the limited trading hours for hospitality.

Fine Gael Councillor Colm O'Rourke says Dublin Bus have confirmed the Nitelink will not be in operation until further notice

O'Rourke says late-night services are needed to help businesses recover:

"The priority for Dublin Bus going forward should be 24-hour buses on all routes.

"But I think we need to start with this as part of the easing of restrictions and to help our economy recover in Dublin"

There are over a dozen Nitelink routes that serve the greater Dublin area and usually run until 4 am on weekends.

O'Rourke says this service is important for workers in the city as well as those heading to nightclubs:

"A lot of people might associate it just with those after a night out but it goes beyond that.

"A lot of workers rely on this, particularly those who work on weekends.

"A lot of students in particular, working weekends in the hospitality sector rely on this low-cost option to get home."
