Sinn Fein is putting forward a bill today to freeze rents for three years.

The party's housing spokesperson, Eoin O'Broin, also wants to introduce a refundable tax credit of up to €1,500 for renters.

The bill is to be debated in the Dail later this evening and is expected to be voted on next week.

Deputy O'Broin says his rent freeze is a better option to rent pressure zones:

"Rent pressure zones were intended to constrain rents at 4 percent a year, 3 years in and rents have gone up almost 50 percent in all of the rent pressure zones"

He says it's now €1,700 a month on average to rent in Dublin and asking rents in the city are in excess of €2,000.

The move comes just days after the Housing Minister, Eoghan Murphy, narrowly survived a no-confidence motion.
