Dublin At Risk Of Taxi Shortage According To City Councillor
A Dublin city councillor is warning that the city could be facing a taxi-shortage.
Fianna Fail's Paul McAuliffe says cab drivers are being forced to leave the industry because of rocketing insurance.
He says there are a growing number of complaints from drivers who can't make a profit because of the price of their premiums, while others can't even get a quote to get started.
He says he's been inundated by complaints from Dubliners who've been left waiting for taxis.
"Well we've seen increasingly over the past three years the cost of car insurance increase, but those in the taxi industry have been particularly impacted," he said.
"The real issue now is that we're being increasingly getting taxi drivers who are coming to us saying that they can't enter the market because insurance companies will not insure them.
"We need the motor insurance report to be examined again with particular focus given on the taxi industry", he added.
"We need the cost of car insurance, particularly for taxis, to be reduced immediately".
