Shamrock Rovers returned to winning ways by beating Galway United 2-0 at the Tallaght Stadium in the SSE Airtricity League.
Goals from Gary Shaw and Brandon Miele secured the 3 points as Rovers closed the gap on 4th placed Derry to a single point.
The early exchanges were uneventful as Rovers dominated possession with Galway happy to allow them control the pace of the game.
The opener came on 36 minutes when a deep cross in from Luke Byrne wasn’t dealt with, Gary Shaw got on the end of it in the box and hooked it into the net.
The Hoops came close to doubling their lead on 57 minutes when a great ball in from Graham Burke was headed just off target by Shaw.
Burke was the next to go close as he dragged an effort just wide before the keeper denied Trevor Clarke.
The pressure paid off when the second came on 68 mins. Burke who was a handful all night for Galway, plucked Tomar Chencinski’s goal-kick out of the sky before flicking it into the path of Brandon Miele.
He calmly volleyed past Conor Winn in the Galway goal to make it 2-0.
The win gives the Hoops a pep in their step ahead of a tricky trip to Turners Cross to face the leaders Cork City. Goal difference along keeps the Tribesmen out of the bottom three.
