Despite opposition from playing bodies. the plans to restructure the All Ireland football championship have passed at GAA's annual congress.
The quarter-final stage will be replaced with two groups of four in a round robin format. The top two will qualify for the semi-finals.
The CPA and GPA both opposed the introduction of the ‘Super 8’ format. The motion was passed with 76% of delegates in favour.
Replays have pretty much been done away with. 91% voted in favour of introducing extra-time in all hurling and football championship games with the exception of provincial and All-Ireland finals.
The traditional September All Ireland final dates have been done away with. The football and hurling finals will be moved to August.
Dubliner John Horan is the new President of the GAA.
The current Leinster chairman received 144 votes in the first round to sweep to victory at Croke Park last night. He'll take up the job next year.
