Warning Not To Return Unknown Missed Calls
ComReg has issued a warning to the public not to return missed calls from unknown international numbers, after another spate of scam calls.
Phone users are being warned not to return missed calls from an unknown number. It follows a number of reports that people have been getting calls from numbers that appear to be coming from Chad and Liberia.
It’s reported that an unknown number will call briefly and hang up, leading to some people returning the call - which it's understood can end up costing them around €6.75 a minute. It's understood to be a money-making scam.
The phone watchdog has said it is "aware that scam calls can take on many forms", therefore ComReg advises consumers to be vigilant at all times.
ComReg has advised consumers that "returning calls to unknown international numbers can be costly" and has issued the following points:
- Hang up immediately, on calls where there appears to be no recipient on the other end.
Be wary of multiple calls being received from the same number.
Do not call back any number that leaves you a blank voicemail message.
Do not provide any personal information for example - banking details PPS number/credit card details/name and address/passport numbers etc.- Unfortunately there is no way to identify a scam call number, and they can resemble a very normal, familiar, geographical number that we would come across on a daily basis.
