Bishop Wants Vaccine Money Spent On Abstinence Courses
A Catholic Bishop is calling for money spent on a cervical cancer vaccine to instead be spent on helping young people abstain from sex.
Gardasil is offered to schoolgirls across the country to help stop them contracting HPV once they become sexually active.
Bishop Phonsie Cullinan of Waterford and Lismore believes the vaccine is lulling young people into engaging in risky sexual behaviour.
Dr Ciara Kelly has called the Bishop's claims "stupid" and "dangerous", and argued that his comments are "like the 1950s all over again".
"This is something to be roundly condemned. The bishop needs to mind his own business, his business is not the health of young women", the GP said.
