Today marks 10 years since the hashtag was first used on Twitter.
Chris Messina, a former engineer at Google and Uber, first used the symbol on August 23rd 2007, when he suggested the symbol could be used to create group messages:
Since then, the hashtag has grown to become one of the most widely used characters of the digital age. To mark it's birthday, Twitter has released an image chronicling it's journey from when Twitter emoji hashtags were first introduced in 2010, to when the word hashtag was entered into the Oxford English dictionary in 2014.
125 million hashtags are used globally on Twitter every day. Some of the most popular ones include #MUFC, #TheWalkingDead and #StarWars.
