Penneys has moved to reassure customers that a batch of faulty flip-flops – containing high levels of a cancer-causing chemical – was never sold in Ireland.
The chain’s parent company Primark is recalling thousands of men’s sandals after they were found to contain high levels of the carcinogenic chemical, chrysene.
The company has been forced to recall black, blue and khaki sandals from its Cedar Wood State range.
It is offering a full refund to anyone who bought them from its outlets outside of Ireland.
A spokesperson for the company has confirmed the flip flops contained the chemical - which is commonly used in dark-coloured dyes.
The company has said that it believed the risk to customers is minimal – and Irish shoppers have not been affected.
