Only 15% of people know what Hepatitis C is.
That's according to research done by an American Pharmaceutical company.
Many people are suffering from the infection of the liver as they are misinformed.
The Hepatitis C virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood and and cannot be spread by the saliva of an infected person, contrary to belief.
The disease affects between 30,000 and 50,000 Irish adults but experts believe that figure is higher because there are no symptoms in three out of four cases.
According to the Sunday Independent, research also found that there is a huge stigma associated with the disease, with more than half not knowing that it is curable.
Treatment for Hepatitis C is a course of tablets for 12 weeks with the cure rate being almost 100 percent.
