From the end of this year, hospitals in Ireland will assume everyone is an organ donor. New laws due to be introduced will presume consent for donation, unless the donor or their family opts out.
The soft opt-out will still see families able to refuse to donate a loved ones’ organs when they die, but families who have already donated - or have received organs - are urging families to talk about organ donation.
Crystal Spollen's daughter, Naveah, died from a brain hemorrhage at the age of 9. She found her daughter's organ donor card just 3 weeks before she got sick.
"Have that conversation with your family. Become someone else's hero, because heaven has our hero", she said.
