A mum of two has been jailed for a year for stealing €144,089 from Bank of Ireland while she worked there. Alice Warnock (55) of Rathbeale Court in Swords said she felt like a fool when she was caught out.
The court heard Alice Warnock had worked for Bank of Ireland since the 80s and in 2004 she started stealing from the bank.
The mum of two would take amounts ranging from €600 to €5,000 and place the cash either in her accounts or family members accounts without them knowing. She told gardai was sorry when the fraud was uncovered while she was on sick leave.
Warnock pleaded guilty to nine sample counts of stealing from bank branches on Talbot Street and in Coolock between November 2004 and March 2012.
Her barrister Lorcan Staines asked the Judge not to jail her saying she had lost her job, her reputation, had to sell her house and the story had been heavily reported in the media. She had paid back all the cash and had no previous convictions.
But the Judge said there was a strong public interest to impose a custodial sentence and jailed Warnock for a year. She hugged her family before being led away.
