Gardai are calling for public order units to be deployed at weekends after a spate of attacks on officers.
They also want those who attack frontline workers to face jail time.
The Garda Representative Association wants riot squads on standby at weekends to deal with roudy crowds and disturbances.
They are asking for units and vans for every division across the country to provide a rapid response when trouble flares.
Officers are also calling for people who attack gardai to face a mandatory prison term after officers were assaulted in Dublin and Mayo over the Easter weekend.
The proposal is set to be debated at their annual conference which gets underway today.
The GRA estimates that there are more than 250 attacks on garda members each year.
