The old Abbey Theatre could be getting a new lease of life.
The original building was destroyed in a fire nearly 70 years ago, but the Irish Times now report the old blocks from it could soon be used to build an open-air theatre.
A fire in July 1951 destroyed the building and The Abbey Theatre was subsequently rebuilt using contemporary materials in the 1960s.
The original stones were saved by a Dublin city architect at the time and were brought to his home in Dalkey. Now, developer Harry Crosbie, has drawn up plans to use those blocks to build an open-air stage in Grand Canal Dock.
The project has been dubbed "The Singing Stones". It has yet to get the green light from Dublin City Council but if approved, it'd be an open stage used to facilitate free performances.
