A 24 year old dad of three has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his friend over a Chihuahua.
Josh Turner of Mooretown in Ratoath was convicted of the murder of Christopher Nevin earlier this month.
25 year old Wayne Cluskey of the same address was convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter and will be sentenced next Monday.
The court heard Josh Turner had lent the deceased Christopher Nevin his male Chihuahua to breed with his female dogs. However a dispute arose over how much was owed when only one pup was produced.
On November the 19th 2015, Josh Turner and Wayne Cluskey called to see Christopher Nevin at a house in Navan and a row broke out. Mr Nevin was hit with an axe and a hatchet and his widow said she will never get the image of him lying in a pool of blood out of her head. Lisa Nevin said part of her died when Christopher did and she never knew what hate was until her husband was taken from her.
Lisa Nevin wasn’t present for the sentence hearing and her statement was read out by a garda. Christopher Nevin’s mother Mary said her family has been left broken after their son was taken from them in such a brutal way. She described Josh Turner as a ''monster''.
The court heard Josh Turner has over 200 previous convictions all at district level. Wayne Cluskey has 41 previous convictions also at district level. These include 15 convictions for animal cruelty. It arose from one incident where pups hadn’t been treated for infestation.
