Sometimes the Champions League group stage doesn't provide many moments of intrigue given the vast disparity between the haves and the have-nots.

But this week did offer a few surprises, chiefly Manchester City losing at home to Lyon, and some tense late shows as Tottenham lost to Inter Milan and Liverpool overcoming PSG.

Plus there was the unexpected red card for Cristiano Ronaldo on his Champions League debut for Juventus which left the former Real Madrid and Manchester United winger in tears.

Speaking of Man United, despite concerns over the pitch, they overcame Young Boys of Bern away from home.

Ireland and Leeds United legend John Giles joined us as always on a Thursday to share his thoughts on some of the talking points from the mid-week action.

On Tottenham, John feels there are underlying issues that are leaving the manager Mauricio Pochettino under "severe pressure" as evidenced by his spiky comments post-match.

"I think he's under severe pressure at the moment. He sounds like a manager, to me, who's under severe pressure," he said.

"Because nobody would know better than himself that this is not right. I know there are problems with [the new Spurs] stadium. But in his case, he's having problems with the team. The team is not performing."

And overall, he added, "I don't think things are right there".

Meanwhile, John also explained why he doesn't rate Manchester City's Fernandinho very highly and also offered a withering assessment of Paris Saint Germain's performance at Anfield.
