New this week…

Owl City “Fireflies”

fireflies-play-tile

Fireflies” was written and produced by Adam Young for Owl City’s second album, Ocean Eyes (2009). The song has attained worldwide success. The song has topped the charts in the United States, Australia, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands. The accompanying music video for the song portrays Young singing it in a toy-filled bedroom, causing the toys and other items in the room to magically come to life.

Best of the rest…

Alexandra Burke “Broken Heels”

broken-heels-play-tile“Broken Heels” is the second single from her debut album, Overcome. It is written by RedOne, Bilal Hajji, Savan Kotecha and produced by RedOne. Alexandra says that the song is all about girl power and how the ladies can do it just as well as the fellas – even in broken heels!

One Republic “All the Right Moves”

Ryan Tedder and the boys are back with a new single from the “Waking Up” album. Frontman Ryan Tedder blogged on his MySpace page that before the song’s release as a single, the band had already performed it live a lot. He added, “however the recorded version is quite another animal then what we performed live- it’s better, we hope you like it- this might be the most fun energetic song we’ve ever tackled.”

The Saturdays “Ego”

ego-play-tile

Ego”is the latest single to be taken from The Saturdays’ “Wordshaker” album. The song was written and produced by Steve Mac, and co-written by Ina Wroldsen. A superhero-themed music video, directed by Richard A. Moore, to “Ego” was released on November, 2009.The song was remixed by American remixer Jason Nevins and British remix production team Almighty for the single’s digital format release.

Cheryl Cole/Will.i.am “3 Words”

3-words-play-tile

3 Words is the second single to be released from Cheryl’s debut album of the same name. It was co-written by Cole and Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am.  She has said that this is her favourite song from the CD as it is inspired from her newly found love for dance singles in the charts like “When Love Takes Over” by David Guetta.

Lily Allen “Who’d Have Known”

who'd-have-known-play-tile

Lily releases the latest song from her hit album “It’s not me, It’s you”. You’d be forgiven for thinking you heard the chorus of this song somewhere before. It essentially uses the hook from Take That’s “Shine” which Allen arrived at by accident. She later contacted the lads who loved the song so much, gave her permission to use.  Lily Allen has been described as and artist who “…like a real person tells us the most intimate details of her real life, only with better hooks”.

Michael Bublé “Haven’t Met You Yet”

haven't-met-you-yet-words-play-tile

Michael has been oft compared to Harry Connick Jr and even Frank Sinatra, but this guy is a star in his own right. This song is taken from his latest album “Crazy Love” and is one of the few songs on it that are original compositions.  It’s all here; brass, strings, piano and tempo. This is the cross-over to mainstream that Buble has needed and proved to be a number one hit in Buble’s native Canada.

Kesha “Tik Tok”

tik-tok-play-tile

Kesha is the US star with attitude. Walking up like P Diddy. Brushing her teeth with a bottle of Jack. She even had the audacity to break into Prince’s house to give him her demo. Its seems to have paid off; “Tik Tok” has been a world-wide smash for the 22 year old Nashville singer. If you’re wondering if she’s had any previous experience; you would have heard her on Flo-Rida’s number one hit “Right Round”

Rihanna “Russian Roulette”

russian-roulette-play-tile-2Rihanna is back and things are darker than ever! This is the first single to be taken from her “Rated R” album. Things are different this time around. This a song of dread and melancholy which takes her into adult territory. Written by long-time collaborator Ne-Yo, this is a real grower and proves that Rihanna is not a flash-in-the-pan arstist but one who is here to stay.

Britney Spears “3″

3-play-tile-2Britney Spears has had quite a year. Back from rehab with a string of hit singles and a successful album. And with the festive season approaching its time for her to do what a lot of heavily marketed acts do; release another greatest hits album. This one is called “Singles” and features Brit’s biggest hits, including this new song “3″. Its a lively pop tune and is Britney doing what she does best. This was a particular milestone for her in the US, being her first number one there in years.

Beyonce “Broken-Hearted Girl”

broken-hearted-girl-play-tile

This is the seventh hit single from Beyonce’s hit album “I Am, Sasha Fierce”. A feat equaled by Michael Jackson and his “Thriller” album. No mean feat. It’s yet another huge power ballad from the former Destiny’s Child superstar. Lots of piano, strings and moving lyrics. It doesn’t quite pack the punch of “If I Were A Boy” but yet again demonstrates her amazing voice. And there’s a gread moody video which you can check out by clicking on the play button to the left.

Foo Fighters “Wheels”

wheels-play-tile

Wheels is the latest single from rock band Foo Fighters and the song they’re using to promote their Greatest Hits album. There’s no doubt that these guys write great radio songs and this one is no exception. Dave Grohl’s screaming vocals hit the right note in this driving song. The song had its live premiere at the White House as part of an Independence Day celebration honouring military service members.

JLS “Everybody in Love”

everybody-in-love-play-tileJLS have followed up their debut hit “Beat Again” with this smooth souls hit “Everybody in Love”. Despite being runners up on last year’s X Factor; they have a huge following as their recent HMV appearance in Dundrum will testify. This is sort of a cross between 90’s boybands Another Level and Blue. It sold 100,000 copies in the first week in the UK propelling it to Number one.

Black-Eyed Peas “Meet Me Halfway”

meet-me-halfway-play-tileBlack-Eyed Peas have hit pay-dirt yet again with the third single to be released from their massive album “The END”. How can you follow up the success of the previous two released which have broken sales records in the US charts? Simple, release another sure-fire hit! And this is what we have here. Fergie takes centre-stage on this one and there’s a cracking video to go along with it.

Leona Lewis “Happy”

happy-play-tileIt’s almost hard to believe that  Leona Lewis once queued with thousands of hopefuls at an X Factor audition. When you look at what she’s achieved since winning the contest two years ago, you have to believe that for some dreams of stardom can come true. Now an established name not only on this side of the pond but in the US also; Leona is back with another huge power ballad. This one has a beautiful video to go with it. Another winner from the Islington girl with the voice of a true diva.

Alexandra Burke “Bad Boys”

bad-boys-play-tileThis is Alexandra’s first bona fide release after last Christmas’ number 1 “Hallelujah”. It’s a rousing pop tune along side rapper Flo Rida. It’s no secret that she has been making waves in the States what with Beyonce popping in during recording sessions to wish her well. The buzz around Alexandra Burke is strong and she’s due to perform here in Dublin in December at our answer to G-A-Y, The George.

Whitney Houston “Million Dollar Bill”

million-dollar-bill-play-tileWhitney Houston is back! It’s been ten years since her last album and many thought she would never sing again. But she’s made it back from rehab with a new album and single. This is old-school Whitney and despite that wardrobe malfunction on X Factor, she’s got a hit on her hands.

Cheryl Cole “Fight for this Love”

fight-for-this-love-play-tileThere isn’t a magazine on the shelves these days that doesn’t have some reference to or picture of Cherly Cole on the cover. The darling of X Factor (although Dannii seems to be giving her a run for her money this season) has finally released her first solo album, “3 Words”. And both it and the single “Fight for this Love” have been number one hits. Will she be the only member of Girls Aloud to fly solo? We wait and watch.
