Getting to sleep during a heatwave can be difficult. We've all been there - tossing and turning for hours and feeling like you're stuck to your sheets.
However, these handy tips should help you get plenty of shut-eye over the coming days or while holidaying in a hot country.
Have a cool shower
Take a cold shower to reduce your body temperature before hitting the hay. You could also dunk your feet in cold water to cool you down fast.
Drink some water before bed
Sweating at night can cause dehydration so make sure you drink a class of water before bed. Don't drink too much or you'll have to take a trip to the loo at 3am. Around half a pint should do the trick.
Avoid alcohol, too much caffine or a big meal
The above can make you feel too warm due to dehydration or over-active digestion so altering your diet on can lead to a better night's sleep.
Use cotton sheets
Light coloured, thin bed sheets made of cotton are more breathable and promote airflow.
Wear loose cotton pjs
This is better than sleeping naked as the fabric absorbs sweat. If you have long hair, make sure to tie it back.
Make a cold water bottle
Fill your beloved hot water bottle up with cold water and stick it into the freezer to create an cool-pack for bed.
Turn off lights and plug out electrics
Light bulbs and electrics give off heat so take advantage of the grand stretch in the evening and switch off your lights (you'll also save some money on your electricity bill).
Sleep with the window open
Just put on some mosquito repellent so you don't get eaten alive.
If you share a bed with your other half, you'll know that spooning increases body heat. One of you should take one for the team and make a bed up on the couch.
Stick your sheets in the freezer
Pop them into a plastic bag and put them into the freezer for a few minutes before you go to bed.
Use an electric fan
Put a shallow bowl of ice in front of a fan
The fan will pick up the cold water from the ie and create a cool mist.
Hang a wet sheet in front of an open window
If you don't have a fan, hang a damp sheet in front of an open window for the same effect.
Sleep on the ground floor
We all know that heat rises so if you're in a multi floor house or apartment, sleep on the ground floor.
Moisturise before bed
Stick some moisturiser or aftersun in the fridge and put some on before bed.
Exercise in the morning rather than the evening
This will stop your body from getting too hot.
Put a wet flannel in the fridge
Leave it in the fridge for an hour or two so that before you go to bed you can drift off while it's resting on your forehead.
Close your curtains during the day
You might look like a hermit to your neighbours but it will keep the house cooler.
