The Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader will meet again this morning before a proposed Dáil debate on a no confidence motion in the Tanaiste.
It will be the fifth time the pair have sat down in a bid to avert a Christmas election.
A spokesperson for Leo Varadkar said there was serious engagement on both sides last night, with all remaining keen to avoid an election in the interest of the country.
After it emerged yesterday that Frances Fitzgerald received additional emails detailing the proposed Garda legal strategy against Maurice McCabe, she tweeted to say that as Justice Minister she could not interfere with the O'Higgins Commission.
Previously, Minister Fitzgerald said she didn't recall being notified about the legal strategy in the summer of 2015.
