Shane Lowry told 98FM Sport's Denis Kirwan he is "really happy" after carding a first round 68 at the BMW Championship at Wentworth this afternoon.

The Offaly native finished his round on a high with four birdies on the back nine to add to the other two he picked up on holes 5 and 6 before a slight momentum stopper ahead of the turn.

There were bogeys on 8 and 9 and he admitted afterwards that his approach work let him down there.

"[They are] two difficult holes and I got myself out of position. That's the way this golf course is but there is chances there when you hit good shots.

"I gave myself a lot of chances coming in. I played the back nine in four under and to be honest it could have been five, six, seven, it was that good my golf on the way in."

Lowry also felt that the support from his parents at the course was a big factor.

"I'm really happy. I'm happy my mother and father are here. I'm sure they're happy enough and it's nice to go out and play well in front of them.

"I'm just happy to be here. I love this week and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

Lowry is in a pack of six tied for 7th place on 4 under par and just two shots off Sweden's Johan Carlsson who is in the clubhouse on 6 under after a round of 66.
