Robert Mugabe has resigned as President of Zimbabwe.
The 93-year-old had been in power for 37 years and there had been fears he was trying to pass control to his wife. The country has been in the grip of an apparent military takeover since last week.
In his letter, Mr Mugabe insists his decision to stand down was 'voluntary', and he wants to allow a smooth transfer of power.
There were cheers from MPs as the news was announced by the speaker of the country's parliament.
