Gardaí say the re-opening of Stepaside Garda Station could be a short-lived measure.
In a report they say it may provide cover while a new station is built elsewhere.
It's re-opening has been dogged with controversy after suggestions its re-establishment was only assured by the intervention of Shane Ross.
The Transport Minister and South Dublin TD has denied any stroke politics took place, and the Gardaí have written to the Office of Public Works to start the process of re-opening Stepaside and 5 other former garda stations.
However in that report they say it may only be a temporary measure.
Acting Commissioner John O'Driscoll says serious consideration should be given to building a new station in Cherrywood.
