Rafa Benitez says Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is not in the same league as Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
The Newcastle United manager saw the Frenchman make a goal scoring return from injury as his side went down 4-1 to United in the Premier League on Saturday.
Gerrard was instrumental to the Spaniard’s success at Liverpool as he helped them win the Champions League in 2005.
He believes the Frenchman must produce consistently over a decade to be considered in the same league as the Liverpudlian legend.
"No, they're different, Stevie was a top-class player for so many years.
"He was very consistent and could make the difference in every game, with or without the ball.
"He was a top-class player. Pogba is a great player, but he still has to be consistent for years like Stevie was for 10 or 15 years.
"Pogba is not my player, so I don't need to talk too much about him. He's a great player, like the majority of the Manchester United players."
Benitez did offer some words of encouragement to a club who have been his long time rivals, saying Manchester United will be in the Premier League title race at the end of the season.
The Toon boss knows their fight is at the other end of the tabe, where survival is the only aim for this season.
