There were just over a thousand same sex marriages in Ireland last year.

2016 was the first full 12 months that the stats were available, after the referendum was passed in 2015.

2,112 gay and lesbian people said "I do" in 2016, with just over 600 male and 450 female couples tying the knot.

They accounted for 5% of all marriages in 2016.

80% opted for a civil ceremony while almost one in ten couples went for a humanist one.

7% had a Spiritualist Union of Ireland service.

The average age of the women getting married was 41, while the men were 40.

In total there were 1056 same sex marriages last year, compared to 21,570 straight weddings.

July and August are still peak season for wedding with January and February being the least popular.

Most are held on Fridays and Saturdays with Sunday and Monday being the least popular.

By comparison there were 21,570 straight weddings in 2016.

Grooms were aged 36 on average, while the brides' aged averaged out at 34.
