A new bill is to be introduced hoping to to tackle fake news.
Fianna Fáil TD James Lawless is introducing his social media and online advertising transparency legislation in the Dáil.
He says: "Fake news is fine. Fake news which is sponsored (paid reach) without disclosing who by, and with intent to influence an electoral outcome, (is) not fine."
The Online Advertising and Social Media (Transparency) Bill would also include new rules requiring transparency on the funding sources of online political advertising.
Mr Lawless has cited the Brexit referendum and the US presidential election as examples of why Ireland needs new legislation.
The bill being introduced would require anyone who wants to purchase online political advertising to give information on the person or entity who is paying for the ad - and a description of what audience is being targeted.
