The man had travelled to Dublin from Galway with friends to go to the All Ireland Hurling Final, but wasn't with his friends at the time he ended up in the canal.
Gardaí at Kevin Street are anxious to speak with anyone who saw what happened, especially a man and woman who came to help him.
Witnesses are being asked to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01-6669400, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
