A man has been shot in the shoulder by an off-duty garda's gun in Portobello. The Garda Watchdog has begun investigating what happened near the Kingsland Parade junction on Portobello Road at around two this morning.
The man is being treated for what GSOC describes as "non-life-threatening" injuries.
The drama unfolded in the early hours of this morning, when at around 2am, locals reported hearing shouting and a noise that sounded like a gunshot.
It's thought an off-duty Garda approached a group of men and told them to put their hands above their heads. The case was referred to the Garda Ombudsman, which is the standard procedure when an officer is involved in an incident where someone is seriously injured.
In a statement, GSOC confirmed that "an official Garda firearm was discharged and a man was injured."
Anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who may have information that may be of assistance to the investigation, is asked to contact GSOC on 1890 600 800.
