Tiger Woods also paid a heartfelt tribute to Palmer: "He meant so much to the game and to me personally. I knew that I could always call him for advice, and I looked forward to seeing him at Bay Hill and the Masters."

“Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs. Your philanthropy and humility are part of your legend. It's hard to imagine golf without you or anyone more important to the game than the King."

Jack Nicklaus said "You can't take away what Tiger Woods has done for the game - but Arnie made it what it is today.

“We were great competitors, who loved competing against each other, but we were always great friends along the way.”

“Arnold always had my back, and I had his. We were always there for each other. That never changed. "He was the king of our sport and always will be.”

Rory McIlroy paid tribute after he won the PGA tour championship in a play-off.

An eagle on 16 and birdies on the last two helped him card a final-round 64 at East Lake.

Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore also finished on 12 under but it was McIlroy who got the victory, and the Fed-Ex Cup title which comes with a lucrative €10 million prize pot.
