Bob Geldof is donating letters, photos and the press cuttings from Band Aid to the National Library.
The President and Taoiseach have welcomed the gesture, which will feature in an exhibition expected to open to the public by 2019.
Do They Know Its Christmas raised millions and still does for starving people in Africa. It culminated in the Live Aid concerts in July 1984 in the UK and the US which many celebrities were a part of.
This Band Aid archive is a huge coup for the National Library, and includes hundreds of letters from celebrities, press cuttings, donations and reports of projects in Africa.
Bob Geldof says he’s delighted the archive is going to be in Ireland, while the President and Taoiseach have welcomed the donation.
Leo Varadkar says it’s a "huge gift" to the State which showed Ireland and an Irishman taking the lead in tackling hunger and injustice.
