It'll cost you more to use Dublin Bikes from January. The yearly fee is going up by a fiver, to €25.

The money will go towards running and expanding the service. The decision to raise the cost was made after concerns about funding the existing service, and expansion plans.

Paul Clegg from Dublin City Council said the move will "close the gap" between the operation of the scheme and described it as "quite a reasonable increase".

Councillors want to expand the bikes to other parts of the city and are trying to find ways to help fund that including an increase in the membership price.

A number of sponsorship deals help fund the scheme, but it’s caused some recent problems when Councillors tried to object to large advertising hoardings going up in their area.

Council officials said they’re expecting to hold a review into how the scheme is funded next year.
