CAO Application Tips

That time of year has come again when thousands of students have to decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives.

The bad news is, the deadline for CAO applications closes tomorrow (Wed Feb 1) at 5.15pm. The good news is, you still have loads of time to change your mind.

And the even better news is, 98FM News is here to help you make up your mind with some tips and advice.

  • Before you fill out your CAO form, you should first do some research on prospective courses. You’ll need to make sure you know everything about the course, such as minimum requirements, course codes and career prospects. This can easily be done by checking online or by flicking through a prospectus for the relevant third level institute.
  • You should also take into account where you want to live.  Many cities offer similar courses so don’t be afraid to ‘shop around.’
  • You can get CAO forms at your school  or online at www.CAO.ie
  • Practice filling in the form before you submit and make sure to ask somebody else to take a look at it.
  • Make sure you get the form in on time!
  • And don’t be afraid to put down your “dream course,” even if you don’t think you’ll get enough points. At the very least, it will help to motivate you to reach your goal and there is nothing worse than getting enough points and realising you never put it down on your application!
  • Don’t be afraid to ask a teacher or a parent for some advice. They have all been there before and have your best interests at heart.
  • And finally, remember that you still have time to change your mind so don’t worry about tomorrow’s deadline!
